Goods Shed South is the refurbished corporate head office for publishers Penguin Group Australia and Pearson Group Australia at Melbourne’s Docklands.
Basso Project Management worked diligently to a tight deadline with the developer and the client as well as the architects, engineers, consultants and builders to remake a neglected industrial railway building into an exciting and creative corporate space.
Originally the Goods Shed spanned over two city blocks, stretching 385 metres in length making it the largest railway shed ever built in Melbourne.
One of the few heritage buildings left at Docklands, the Goods Shed was derelict for over 30 years and became redundant in the 1980s. When Collins Street was extended, it was bisected to create the North and South sides.
Construction teams had to restore the entire building to original condition; the slate roof completely replaced, the clerestory windows painstakingly replaced, and the exposed timber restored and hazardous material removed.
The integrated fitout retains many of the original features of the historic railway goods shed including iron columns, exposed trusses, brickwork and exposed timber.
New features like the chilled beam system for air-conditioning and low-impact heating provide a greater degree of comfort at lower operating costs and the abundant natural light floods a comfortable open plan office space.
The office is now home to more than 450 people. The refurbishment of Goods Shed South is part of Walker Corporation’s $1.3 billion Collins Square development.
