Melbourne – Athenaeum Theatre

Athenaeum Theatre upgrade contributes significantly to the ongoing preservation and conservation of the heritage building.

It also improves facilities for performers and patrons with an expanded stage and orchestra pit, new seating, better backstage and bathroom facilities.

The Athenaeum Theatre in Collins Street is Melbourne’s oldest cultural institution. It began life as Melbourne’s first Mechanics Institute in 1839. The Melbourne City Council met in the building until 1852.

The project was politically significant and work had to be undertaken under strict confidentiality. Government funding requirements meant the work had to be completed in record time.

“With a building of this age and history we had to manage and deal with a range of unexpected latent conditions without the luxury of time and cost extensions.” Elia Basso, Director, Basso Project Management
